What hot stone massage is

Smooth, flat stones are warmed in water and used in two ways. Some are rested on the body, usually along the back, while your therapist works elsewhere; others are held in the hand and glided over the muscle in place of the palm.

The heat does a good deal of the work. Warmth makes muscle easier to work with, so a stone moving slowly over the back can feel as though it reaches further than a hand at the same pressure, without the intensity of deep tissue massage.

Who it suits

People who feel the cold, people who find ordinary massage pleasant but want something more enveloping, and anyone whose back stiffens in an air-conditioned office. It is also a good choice on a day when you would rather be still than stretched.

How the session works

Your therapist checks the temperature of every stone against their own skin before it touches yours, and checks with you as well. A stone is placed over a towel rather than directly on bare skin wherever that is more comfortable, and any stone comes off the moment you say it is too warm.

The pace is slower than a Swedish massage, and most of the session is spent on the back, shoulders and legs.
